a coda to supernatural 4.07 (duh, i'm late. i KNOW.)

title: questions of faith
summary: He has doubts that keep him tied up inside over his father's orders... and his father's orders.
notes/warnings: a coda to 4.07, after watching two scenes with dean and castiel interacting.

He has doubts. He has doubts that keep him tied up inside over his Father's orders... and his Father's orders. Because he is made in His image, what's good and righteous leads him. Makes him seem the hammer and all the little humans and their problems nails. He can see the wickedness that burns in the hearts of man, these creatures who live day to day without a care for how they hurt his Father's heart, and knows that it is his duty to carry on.

Because he is God's son, he battles onward against an enemy he is too weak to stand against. He hurtles on a path that leads him and his brothers, him and Dean Winchester, Hell's Reborn, all on to face Lucifer. God's children facing his rebellious son.

And yet, he has God's Warrior, tested through the fires of Hell. A mere human with more faults and sins than some of His least devout. A man with little belief in God, and less in goodness. This imperfect mortal is meant to lead them against the enemy, despite his weaknesses.

Castiel has his doubts. Although he serves his Father and will do what it takes to stop this endgame, he wants to follow Dean wherever he may lead. Uriel may have wanted to end the little town to stop Samhain's seal from being broken, but Castiel prayed to his father that they might be able to save it. As they argued between them over the light having to follow this... creature of dust, he saw a glimpse of recognition in Dean's eyes.

The stutter step of syncope, the loss of rhythm in what they do and what they're meant to do, has him doubting just a little more. Has him wondering if what they're doing is right. Uriel wants to blame it on his prolonged time on Earth, his dealing too much with humans. He's warned by the examples of those lost in the Flood, their brothers who forsook their heavenly place for a place at the side of mankind-- the first demons in all creation.

In the pale beam of moonlight through the blinds at yet another motel in yet another town on their quest against the unknown and unseen, Castiel watches over Dean. Watches the man-- still tortured by visions of Hell and torn by his love for his brother-- sleep, and prays that his faith won't lead him astray.
