Apparently, you haven't listened to me since sixth grade. You say I have nothing to say. Well, kid... that's where you're wrong. I only tell you what you should do after I've thought out what's best. When it doesn't matter... I don't care.
So... at the assembly. I found out that you got thrown in the pool. I told you you shouldn't hang out there anyway. Only two types of people hang out at the pool-- parents, and girls who're trying to get seen. I go to find you... and you tell me you're going to this 26-year-old guy's room. I remember getting in trouble last year for being in our brother's room. So I say, Kid, you shouldn't go. You'll get in trouble. You blow me off.
So I stopped caring.
Then, when no one can find you for two hours straight, how do you think Mom and Dad feel? You should know by now they're paranoid. So you get into all kinds of trouble. And you blame it on me.
When we bring it up two days later, you called me "lame" for not being by the pool. No, Kid, you're just stupid. You miss the two blaring neon signs above your head: Reputation and Parents. Reputation: that's what you're gonna get if you don't quit hanging around a bunch of roughhousing guys. You can't be 17 years old and think that you're just having fun with your friends. Appearances are everything. And Parents: that's what we have to deal with. You have to learn to pacify. Tell them where you'll be... or the general vicinity, and then show up at fairly normal times to make them feel safe.
I know we don't like the same things. And I'm tired of being the one to clean up your mess. I'll only be in 3 or four places at the hotel. I don't care *what* you do... as long as I don't have to be the one who lies for you and is left hanging. I don't want to be the only one Mom and Dad can depend on.
So listen very carefully. Tell me where you're going and then BE THERE so that when Mom and Dad call, I can come get you and we can pretend like nothing was any different. And then, don't agree to go to a boy's room. Cause that begs for trouble.
What's more, listen to the way you sound before you make a statement. Calling someone 'too lame' or 'too lazy' or saying that you're an exception to the rule sounds so stupid. That will get a smack in the face and a laugh before it persuades anyone.
Look, I'm tired of being the one who has to be good. Brian is considered stupid cause all he wants is fun. You're stupid because you don't listen and you argue even if you're in the wrong. I'm tired of it.
I don't give a flying crap about you. Just don't leave me stranded to Mom and Dad's devices. I don't want to hear the speeches. I don't want to be the Golden Child.
