so this morning i caught up with the first two episodes of Fringe. and i have to say that it's... ..not what i expected. ooo... fringe science. gimme a break. you've got the crazy!ex-scientist, and his misfit!genius son. you've got the recently-betrayed, lost-her-lover fbi agent. and the evil!company who stole the crazy!ex-scientist's crazy!evil!work from post-vietnam gov't projects.
got that?
ok. now, throw in gratuitous nudity and drug use for the first ep, and the greatest 10 minute pregnancy EVER in the second episode (complete with half-dreaming hysterical pregnancy for the fbi agent).
are you still with me??
this show is RIDICULOUS. i vaguely remember first season X Files. this? is probably remotely like that. but this is even more like Threshold. which, of course, lasted less than a season. it's gonna be too much for most people to stick with. you kinda had me sold on the first ep, really. up to a point. because, damn. it opens with a guy suddenly grabbing his tummy on an airplane and then rotting while everyone is watching. (amazingly gross use of puke there too) and then it spreads to the WHOLE FUCKING PLANE. when the co-pilot's jaw starts falling off??? i was like AWESOMESAUCE. ZOMBIE PLANE!! especially as i was wondering how they'd land the plane?? HAH. new autopilot lands the plane. that's pretty cool.
but. then it turns into they all die and the fbi agent's boyfriend (who's also fbi and ALWAYS plays a bad guy) gets a form of it and they have to get crazy!ex-scientist to come save the day and
blah di freakin blah.
suffice it to say that there was way too much involved in the first ep. and too much deus ex machina in episode two. because hey, i knew that the bad guy had been stalking for 12 or more years, and i knew he was a product of crazy guy's science experiments. and i knew why he was taking the pituitary gland waaaaaaaaaayyy before they figured it out. HOW CAN YOU SAVE THE AHA MOMENT TIL 10 MINUTES BEFORE THE END??
anyway. it's not a bad show, per se. it's more like... it's like all the shows that last about a season because they're a little too intelligent or they're too layered or something. besides, they've yet to get to the precognitive section. i'm sure they will by the end of the season, but right now, it's all science, not pseudo-science.
and omigod josh jackson. his voice?? annoying. and i'm not sure i'd pick him or the misfit genius. i keep seeing him in The Skulls (never watched dawson's creek) and that movie pissed me off even more than this show. jesus.
anyway. fringe... not a bad show, but not hella awesome either. they've got a lot to do to fix it.
