From the Round Table.
Life:

Louise noticed Alex had been sitting very quietly for a long time, almost the entire night, while everyone around him had been cracking jokes and telling stories. She moved around to a seat nearby and bumped her shoulder against his. “How is it going, Alex?” she asked softly.

He shrugged his shoulders and gave her a blank look. “Going?”

“How is life treating you?” she rephrased her question. “Is everything going alright in your life?”

“Life,” he said. He gave a quick series of motions with his hands, like he had forgotten how to speak English, like he had forgotten everything about speech, before shaking his head slightly. “It is fine,” he whispered, and left it at that.

Louise frowned and put a hand lightly on his shoulder before he quickly shrugged it off. “It does not look fine. We are here for you to talk to us, you know? For you to tell your problems and tell us about what is happening with your life.”

He sighed softly, twitching when the group got very quiet. “I just miss home, you see. I miss my Luke. I miss working in that horrid café and taking off whenever I like to go to exotic locales. I miss Kyden and Tyler. I miss seeing how big Dominic is getting and I cannot even remember what size clothes he was in when I left, let alone what he is wearing now. Little boys grow up so fast.” He shook his head again, like he was trying to shake off negative thoughts. “It is nothing.”

“That does not sound like ‘nothing’ to me,” Sin said, dropping a hand to rest lightly on Alex’s knee before moving it back to his own lap. “It sounds like you are homesick. It happens.”

“How long were you planning to stay here anyway, Alex?” Nisha asked. “It was not meant to be forever, was it?”

Alex shook his head. “No, not forever. It was never meant to be forever. I was only staying long enough to get my affairs in order. She is waiting for me. Imagine: having someone love you enough to let you disappear for such a long time, and finding that you do not want to stay away.”

“You should go back. As soon as class lets out again, in the next few weeks.” Nisha nodded her head sharply, as if deciding the matter. “You are going back, even if I have to buy the ticket for you.”

He laid his head on her shoulder, pressing a quick kiss to her cheek. “No need for that, but thank you for the offer.” She blushed and lowered her eyes. “It is good to have a friend like you, Nisha.”

“You too, darlin’. You too.” She gave an awkward pat to his head and shifted slightly away.
